Are Oakland Raiders Hiring Too Many White NFL Coaches? The Oakland Raiders have hired Jack Del Rio as head coach, who in turn selected Bill Musgrave as offensive coordinator, and now are going to interview Mike Smith as defensive coordinator. Why? Why not interview talented black coaches like Vance Joseph or Jay Hayes or John Hayes of the Cincinnati Bengals or John Marshall of the Pittsburgh Steelers? An NFL coach is not better just because they are white. And a 2002 study found that black NFL head coaches were commonly more successful than white NFL head coaches. All that and 70 percent of the league's players are black. The optics are all wrong here.
