Warriors New Arena UCSF Lawsuit By Mission Bay Alliance Update

Warriors New Arena UCSF Lawsuit By Mission Bay Alliance Update There’s an untold story worth investigating now of alleged pressure applied by San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee upon University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Chancellor Sam Hawgood regarding the Mayor’s ill-conceived attempt to make the proposed Golden State Warriors arena in Mission Bay his “legacy project.” According to details set out in the attached complaint, Chancellor Hawgood wrote a letter Feb 12, 2015 to Mayor Lee and Warriors’ owner, Joe Lacob and the organization’s President & CEO, Rick Welts expressing his “grave concerns” about “unacceptable traffic parking impacts” as well as fears of “safety, security, [and] noise” that could endanger UCSF’s and the general public’s investment in Mission Bay and the operations of the campus and hospital. Chancellor Hawgood then listed a series of “conditions needed to satisfy UCSF’s concerns” focused on duel event scheduling of Giants and Warriors games, safety, security, public services, noise, transportation, communication, and compliance. The complaint details the events and pressures that lead the Chancellor and UCSF to give up all UCSF’s legal rights to challenge the arena project. (See attached Complaint.) For context, there is another, related case before the California Court of Appeal filed by The Mission Bay Alliance that claims San Francisco public officials violated the California Environmental Quality Act and other laws in their zeal to approve an 18,000-seat sports arena and event center on a site that would displace and disrupt the vital, diverse and progressive community of Mission Bay and cause citywide environmental impacts.
