New Black Pharrell Williams Is The Old Black. The idea of “New Black” as Pharrell Williams and others express it, is really the Old Black. The New Black says, as Williams put it, “The New Black doesn't blame other races for our issues. The New Black dreams and realizes that it's not a pigmentation; it's a mentality. And it's either going to work for you, or it's going to work against you. And you've got to pick the side you're gonna be on." But the bottom line is The New Black is just us responding to a white World around us, and saying 'Ok, white folks, we're not threatening' unlike those other blacks you're used to. And if you think about that, it means one black person putting another black person down before a white audience. That's what the New Black does – but it's not new at all. In my life there have been blacks who commonly put other blacks down in an effort to look more appealing to whites. That's why I just hate this “New Black” idea – it's the crabbarrel all over again. And that's nothing new.

The Oakland Raiders have reportedly extended an offer to Louisville Cardinals Defensive Coordinator Todd Grantham. The Raiders could have went after former New York Giants Defensive Coordinator Perry Fewell. While the NY Giants were 6 and 10, a large reason for that had to do with Eli Manning's 14 interceptions and 92 passer rating. Moreover Grantham was paid almost $1 million at Louisville. Maybe he has had pro level experience, but Perry Fewell was a better candidate. Todd Grantham is not the college football defensive equal to Chip Kelly. This is another example of why I scream about racism in this process with the Raiders this year. This is terrible.

Richard Sherman Debates Julie Buehler At Super Bowl Media Day Julie Buehler, my friend who's the host of Buehler's Day Off on KXPS 1010 AM Palm Springs / Palm Dessert, loves to argue – right or wrong, she brings it. (And with me, she's wrong most of the time – that's how I wound-up guest hosting her show two years ago: she lost a bet to me that the Miami Heat were going to beat the OKC Thunder.) But this time my Crossfit friend picked a juicy target in starting a debate with Seattle Seahawks Cornerback Richard Sherman. Sherman took issue with New England Patriots Owner (Chairman and CEO) Robert Kraft, who had a special guest over his house prior to the AFC Championship Game: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Kraft's Patriots went on to beat the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship Game, and also took actions that set the stage for #DeflateGate. Sherman argues that such visits by Goodell are proof that there's what he calls “collusion” and a “conflict of interest” on his part. The one who's considered the NFL's best cornerback contends that the Patriots will never be punished should it come to pass that #DeflateGate was a deliberate act, because of their relationship. Julie Buehler combatively disagrees with this, and had choice words for Sherman prior to her encounter with him at Super Bowl Media Day. Thing is, Richard didn't know about Julie's point of view, let alone Julie. But when his time to come before the media presented itself at Super Bowl Media Day, Julie grabbed the moment, and this, according to blogger John Kryk, at Kryk's Slants is what happened: BUEHLER: Kraft said that you didn’t know enough about that situation, so how much care do you put into your own research for you to state publicly that the commissioner of the NFL has a conflict of interest? SHERMAN: Um, it’s not difficult for me to research. BUEHLER: Did you do any research? SHERMAN: I obviously did. BUEHLER: But you were incorrect about that. SHERMAN: In which way was I incorrect? BUEHLER: You saying Goodell and Kraft have a conflict of interest is like you and (current New England Patriots cornerback and former Seattle Seahawk) Brandon Bowner not being able to talk as former teammates. SHERMAN: That’s a little different. BUEHLER: How so? SHERMAN: I don’t work for Brandon Browner. BUEHLER: (brief pause) SHERMAN: You don’t have anything else? BUEHLER: Oh no, I do. I wonder how much research you do – SHERMAN: But you never answered my — you never (continued) our discussion, you never concluded that, so I don’t work for Brandon Browner, so the point is invalid. (Text of the full exchange at Zennie62.com) And that was the end of that, as Sherman took another question. As Julie's exchange wasn't recorded by NFL Media for posting, this is the only account I've seen other than what Julie will post at some point (the photo has her using her smartphone to record the talk). Thus, the argument didn't blow up in new media terms as much as it would have if the NFL had recorded it. But the main question here is who's right: Richard or Julie. Well, they both are. As one who is the only NFL media person to also have worked to form a bid to bring a Super Bowl to a city, in my case Oakland in 2000 for the 2005 Super Bowl (we lost to Jacksonville), I can tell you the way the NFL works, and has worked, is that while the Commissioner is the organizational hub and spoke of the league, he also serves at the pleasure of the group of NFL owners that govern it. So Roger, like Paul Tagliabue and Pete Rozelle before him, has to walk a very fine line. Its important that he work to maintain relationships with his 32 bosses, and yes, that does call for being a visitor to their homes should the opportunity present itself. Such actions are not uncommon in NFL history, and never have been. So there is collusion between the Commissioner and the owners, and Goodell does have better relationships with some owners than others. But that's not a conflict of interest, and it shows that Sherman, who's employed by the NFL, really doesn't understand how it works. Julie was right to challenge Sherman on this, but she was wrong to argue that collusion, while not illegal in this case, does exist. There are secret meetings and collaborations – it's called NFL politics. Stay tuned.

Given the chance to offer words of support for his quarterback on the ESPN show His and Hers, Bennett opted to say that players don't stay with one team and that Cutler's fate was with new Chicago Bears head coach John Fox. He said nothing in praise of Jay Cutler. If Cutler doesn't have the ringing endorsement of players like Bennett it looks like he will have a hard time getting it from John Fox.

Does that mean the ball was lighter which would impact passing for the Colts? And the Pats are going to the Super Bowl? That seems wrong. Just wrong.
Are Oakland Raiders Hiring Too Many White NFL Coaches? The Oakland Raiders have hired Jack Del Rio as head coach, who in turn selected Bill Musgrave as offensive coordinator, and now are going to interview Mike Smith as defensive coordinator. Why? Why not interview talented black coaches like Vance Joseph or Jay Hayes or John Hayes of the Cincinnati Bengals or John Marshall of the Pittsburgh Steelers? An NFL coach is not better just because they are white. And a 2002 study found that black NFL head coaches were commonly more successful than white NFL head coaches. All that and 70 percent of the league's players are black. The optics are all wrong here.

That kind of media can help her in fundraising efforts not just for herself but for the Democratic Party. It is one reason why I think she should be the next head of the Democratic Party.
Republican Iowa Senator Joni Ernst sounds more like a Democrat than a Republican in her speech - the GOP response to President Obama's State Of The Union Address. The Senator said nothing that really separated the GOP and boiled it all down to The Keystone Pipeline, Abortion, Obamacare, and the Tax Code. That is it. She and the GOP agree on everything else. And she attacks the very GOP staple of being for the guy with money Get it. So the GOP House and Senate majorities will last for two years and that is it. "I know cause I won both of them" Obama punks GOP at SOTU President Obama delivered his best line of the 2015 State Of The Union Address. When he got to the point of his speech where he said "I have no more campaigns to run" an applause came from someone or group from the Republican side of the room. Obama quickly went off script and said "I know cause I won both of them". That was a huge development. It was a clear message that the Democrats really didn't lose the mid-term 2015 elections. It was also a clear signal that the President was on his game and ready. It was the speech the President should have given in 2014, but I also blame us Dems, who did not stay on message as a group.

Bill Mugrave will install an offense that is based on Bill Walsh's system of short controlled passes and progression reads but adjusted for each NFL Team he has been with. He will have something like 20 runs and 70 passes for a game plan. His passes will use reliance on yards after the catch. Musgrave will use formations that spread the receivers the width of the field, and come up with gadget plays to keep defenses honest. The one question is what did he learn from Chip Kelly? Will he use it?
Bill Musgrave Oakland Raiders Offensive Coordinator. The Oakland Raiders and Head Coach Jack Del Rio have named Bill Musgrave as the new offensive coordinator. Musgrave was an Oregon QB who was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 1991 and became a coach in 1997 first with the Raiders. Since then Musgrave has been kind of a journey man offensive coordinator going from Oakland to Philadelphia and San Francisco and Atlanta Minnesota and back to The Eagles and now he joins The Raiders. Musgrave will bring a variety of passes to Oakland. His offenses have not been statistical marvels but I wonder how his time with Chip Kelly allowed him to learn elements that he will bring to Oakland. Like the no-huddle for example. Musgrave is known as a person who is good at in game game plan adjustments. With Del Rio and Mike Tice and Musgrave the Raiders have perhaps their most experienced coaching staff in some time.

American Sniper at Grand Lake Theater Oakland. American Sniper is the gripping and sad movie by Bradley Cooper and Clint Eastwood that is the true story of Chris Kyle. Mr. Kyle was called the most lethal sniper in U.S. history. Kyle logged 160 kills but he would only say that he was helping his brothers after four tours of duty. Chris Kyle was killed by a veteran he was trying to help. But his story reminds me of the work of Code Of Support. Code Of Support helps veterans and families of veterans. Jack Del Rio Oakland Raiders Head Coach Press Conference Part One. New Oakland Raiders Head Coach Jack Del Rio was introduced today at this Press Conference held at Raiders Headquarters in Alameda. Coach Del Rio came in with his wife Linda and Raiders General Manager Reggie MacKenzie. Mr MacKenzie said that Del Rio was "a Raider" and the right man for the job after a long and exhaustive search. In this introduction before the question and answer session started Coach Del Rio, who was the Denver Broncos Defensive Coordinator, said that more than scheme he wanted to have a team that was mentally tough. Oscar Nominations 2015 #OscarSoWhite spells trouble for Oscar telecast. In 2014 The 86th Academy Awards set a ratings record as 43.7 million people tuned in to watch the ABC telecast. One of the top films and the one that took home Best Picture was "12 Years A Slave" which was about a free black man who was captured and enslaved for 12 years during the late 1800s and a true story. The other well-regarded movie was The Butler starring Forest Whitaker and financed in part by Oprah Winfrey. In 2015 The Academy ignored black films and black talent. And sparked a Twitter rage shown in the hashtag #OscarSoWhite. Thus I predict that the 2015 telecast of the 87th Academy Awards will show a ratings dive that will set the gains made back five years. Given the popularity of shows featuring blacks and Latinos, particularly on ABC, an Oscars telecast that features Lilly white movies will only draw poor ratings. Jack Del Rio Oakland Raiders Head Coach - Welcome to Oakland! This is to welcome Jack Del Rio to Oakland as the Raiders new head coach. This video is also to offer some advice. My consistent concern has been with the Oakland Raiders Offense and who will guide Derek Carr to the next level of his performance potential. It has also been with the design of the Raiders Offense and my assertion that it has gotten away from its brand. To the end of rebuilding the offense, I recommend taking time to meet and talk with Cal Head Coach Sonny Dykes and Offensive Coordinator Sonny Dykes. And that would be because the Cal Offense is one of the best examples of pure passing today. They know the Airraid System. The best person to coach the Airraid is Kevin Sumlin but he is in a big contract at Texas A&M. So the other good person is Kevin Kingsbury who is the Texas Tech Head Coach but I think could be drawn to Oakland under the right proposal. But the Airraid Offense is the best expression for the Oakland Raiders Offense of the future. Welcome to Oakland!

John Flores is new Interim Oakland City Administrator. Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf today announced John Flores as the new interim Oakland City Administrator. California State law prohibits the extension of the current contract for interim City Administrator Henry Gardner, who was appointed in June 2014. This appointment will be presented to the Oakland City Council for confirmation on Tuesday, January 20, and pending Council confirmation, Mr. Flores will assume his new duties on Wednesday, January 21. Mayor Libby Schaaf and City staff are working to select a top-notch permanent City Administrator. The search was officially closed last Friday, January 9th and the City has received 58 outstanding applicants. Initial interviews will be held the first week of February. “I regret that the law prohibits us from having consistent leadership from Mr. Gardner until the new permanent City Administrator is hired,” said Mayor Libby Schaaf. “But I could not be more grateful that John Flores, an esteemed and experienced administrator, is willing and able to serve the City in this capacity.” “It has been an honor to serve Oakland as City Administrator,” said outgoing interim City Administrator Henry Gardner. “But I know that my service to Oakland does not end here.
